Seasonal Decorating

Thanksgiving weekend is finally here and I am looking forward to spending time with friends and family. Does your family gather together this time of year to continue traditions and catch up with loved ones?

Our family tradition is getting together at my grandparents’ house for a large turkey dinner including mashed potatoes, squash, green beans with cucumber topping, cabbage rolls, with apple and pumpkin pie for dessert. I am looking forward to the meal already and set aside my stretchy pants for relaxing in afterwards. Although catching up and sharing a meal is a great part of the thanksgiving weekend, I think I enjoy decorating for the occasion more!

My co-worker, Alena and myself handle decorating client’s homes and businesses for each different season throughout the year.  Designing and installing these seasonal decorations is one of the most fun parts of my job here at Snips.  It’s a chance for us to experiment and get creative, so we are always very excited about each new display we get to create.  Our outdoor fall urns this year have included: mums, grasses, kale, ornamental peppers, gourds of random shapes and sizes, and pie pumpkins.  Our indoor decorations have similar features like ornamental peppers, assorted gourds and pie pumpkins, but also incorporate indoor mums, Indian corn, scarecrows, artificial fall leaves, and flower spikes.

Feeling inspired? Thinking about your own home? There are lots of great garden centres and shops in the area where you can purchase pre-made urns and other decorations, or pick up the materials to make your own. Some of my favorite shops include: Rice Road Greenhouses and Vermeer’s Garden Centre. Of course you can always call on Alena and I to do the “dirty work” for you and let us create the décor of your dreams.

Regardless of décor, remember to gather this weekend with family and friends, be thankful for the small things in life, and perhaps create a new tradition that will last a lifetime.
